Traditional Bedroom Furniture

Traditional furniture is characterized by intricate carvings of leaf, shell, animal or scroll motifs and stylized, architectural detail such as ornate wavy crown and dentil molding. The style has cabriole legs and bun, onion or arrow feet. Bedroom furniture is usually made of wood in medium to dark finishes with decorative accents that possess a very formal or stately feel. Sleigh, poster, and canopy beds are typically elaborate with timeless flowing lines. There are intricate carvings on just about every surface possible.

Contemporary/Modern Bedroom Furniture

Contemporary and modern are sometimes used interchangeably. Both styles emphasize geometric form and minimal detail. Contemporary furnishings incorporate color and modern furniture uses neutral palettes. Platform beds, both storage and standard are associated with contemporary styles.

Contemporary is not uniform, utilizing a variety of finishes, palettes and materials to create texture and visual interest. Their geometric forms are often softened by curved lines. Furnishings can be constructed of lighter woods, exposed woods, metal, rubber, stone, or concrete. Contemporary furniture has relaxed profiles with selective decorative elements that are typically part of the design or function of the piece.

Modernism is bold, austerely functional in form and stark as it strips away anything strictly ornamental, focusing instead on replacing the old with the new. This style emphasizes the machine age and technological developments. Modern style has polished surfaces, sleek profiles, pure geometric shapes and asymmetrical forms. Popular construction materials are colorful plastics, melamine, Formica, fiberglass, steel, aluminum and wrought iron. Function of each furniture piece is key.

Country Bedroom Furniture

Country furniture is different from one geographic location to another. Traditional Country furniture is heavier and darker. European style and pioneers influenced smaller scale furniture in lighter finishes and simpler detail. Casual Country furniture is made in natural wood finishes or milk-paint finishes. Formal country is busy with lots of detailing and in medium to darker woods and finishes.

Popular country sub styles:

English Country - based on interpretations of rural English designs from past eras

French Country - hand-painted accents or stenciling using fruit or floral motifs; lighter wood finishes

Cottage - distressed or weathered finishes; furnishings can include details such as stenciling or bead-board

Rustic - simple lines, rough-hewn look and practicality; pieces are often oversized

Lodge – more sophisticated than cottage; graceful curves and unaffected detailing

Other Noteworthy Sub Styles

Transitional takes the best of the classic elements of traditional and contemporary styles making a more formal and comfortable look. Lines and forms are simple, but sophisticated. Upholstered armchairs or bed benches are often overstuffed or oversized. Motifs are used sparingly and the wood is medium to dark in finish.

Coastal, beach house or beach style are inspired by coastal areas of the world. Coastal furnishings are relaxed with uncomplicated lines. Organic wicker, rattan or wood materials give a tropical and exotic feel. Louvered accents are commonly used.

Palettes range from rich earth tones to vibrant colors reminiscent of the sun, sky, tropical fish and coral. Woods can have bright, light, milky finishes.

Mission vs. Shaker

Mission style is typified by simple, rectilinear forms with minimal ornamentation. Natural oak and local materials were used. Chair backs, headboards and footboards are often slatted.

Often mistaken for Mission, Shaker style furniture was designed and made by American Shakers. They crafted furniture for its usefulness with clean, spare lines and slender, tall forms. Lighter finishes are the norm.

Goodbye Clutter, Hello Clean Bedroom

Sometimes, there just doesn't seem to be enough space. No, I don't mean space between you and your spouse. What I mean is space in the house. If you're like most modern people today, you probably live, or someone living in, apartment condos. If that's the case, you probably know how easy it is to clutter up the space there.

This is especially true in bedroom. No one wants their room look as though a bomb just went off in it. But we might not want to throw out a lot of the things in there either. So how do you keep the room organized?

Believe it or not, there are many good ways to create, or rather, hide spaces, in your room that will help keep your room organized, and looking great at the same time. Here are a few ways to help you make the most out of your space.

Closet Storage

One of the best way to create storage space is in your closet. All you have to do is get a closet storage units. This can be as simple as some wire racks/baskets in your closet. There are lots of places that sell this for you to price shop. They might seem like they take up a lot of space, but in reality, you can more than triple your current closet's storage capacity.

Storage Chest/Night Stand

Night stands are extremely elegant to have in the room. So a useful way to create more storage space is to simply get a chest, and place it beside your bed as the night stand. You will be able to store small things that you're not sure where to store anywhere else, as well as the little things you want to grab right away.

Under-bed container

Let's face it. A lot of the times when we're not sure where to put something, we just shove it under the bed. Granted that's the case, why not keep it organized? A simple storage case under your bed can make all the difference in the world.

Finally, paint your room in light colors, such as light shades of mint green, icy blue, cream, white, etc. Keep your room decor to a minimal. Also, push your bed all the way to the end of the room. All of this will help make your room seem bigger.
